Dear Dell,
With the exception of the fantastic UP3218K (32", 8K, but squarely targeted at professionals), your new monitor lineup offers absolutely nothing to get excited over. After a decade of stagnation, monitor technology for the enthusiast consumer is just starting to get exciting again (freesync/gsync, HDR10, high ppi displays), but Dell seems to be sitting on the sidelines. :-(
At CES 2017, Asus and Acer both announced displays that clearly show where the industry is (and should) be headed:
- Asus ROG Swift PG27UQ
- Acer Predator XB272-HDR
Both monitors use the same panel (from AU Optronics) with these specs:
- 27"
- UHD (4k) IPS
- Quantum Dot technology
- HDR10 support
- 144Hz
- 1000 nits peak brightnes
- DCI-P3 colorspace
Included are modern inputs and electronics (DisplayPort 1.4 and gsync). That's pretty much the monitor I've been waiting over a decade for. The problem, obviously, is that both monitors come from Asus and Acer. I'd be willing to look past the fact that their monitors are designed for 12yo gamers rather than grown ups, but I'm not willing to ignore that neither of these companies have great track records when it comes to monitor build quality (light bleed, defective pixels, creaky plastic, etc). I'd prefer to get this type of display from Dell, but so far... crickets.
Both are planning to release their monitors in Q2 2017. Dell, please release a worthy competitor. If Dell can use the same panel and add to that the following:
- Dell infinity Edge (thin bezels)
- Brightness sensor to automatically reduce brightness based on ambient light
- Thunderbolt 3 [USB Type-C] with 100W power delivery
- DisplayPort 1.4 IN [USB Type-C]
- DisplayPort 1.3 OUT (for daisy chaining monitors)
- gsync
- 3 or 4-Port USB Hub
You'd have a winner on your hands. I'd buy three at almost any price. I'm sure hundreds of thousands of others would as well.
