Dell E1914H Monitor Entering Power Save Mode

I recently purchased a E1914H Dell monitor (from Dell) to use as a 2nd monitor on my Dell Inspiron 13 7000 series, which is running Windows 8 (also purchased from Dell).

Because Dell sent the wrong VGA/HDMI cable and the sales rep did not return emails, I purchased an adapter through Amazon.

The very first time I connected the monitor it worked. The next morning and 90% of the time since then, it "enters power save mode" whenever it is turned on. When I touch any of the buttons on the front of the computer I then see the message "There is not signal coming from your computer. Press any key on the keyboard or move mouse to wake it up." Doing this does not wake it up.

Another interesting issue is whenever the monitor is connected to the computer, two things happen. First, if it is connected when I turn the computer on, it will not come on. It stays on the blue screen. The minute I disconnect the cable to the monitor, it comes on. If the computer is already on and I connect the monitor, the icons in the bottom menu on the desktop get itty bitty and will not open any programs.

I have installed the driver and reset the monitor to factory defaults. I do not know if this is a Windows 8 issue, a monitor issue or an adapter issue. Or all of the above.

As I said, it works about 80% of the time.

Suggestions? Comments?

Thanks so much.
