Dell Display Manager Feature Request:

hello, I use 3 Dell U2414H monitors in portrait mode as one big (virtual) desktop. The monitors are combined on driver level by radeon configuration. This way the combined monitors will also work as one in 3D full screen mode.

To comfortably work in the windows environment I use Dell's Display Monitor Software, which enables me to comfortably fit windows in one of the 3 monitors. I use one of the standard presets for this (always the 3 column preset).

I am happy with DDM functioning, except for 2 issues that keep 'bugging' me:

SITUATION 1
==========

Every time I reboot the PC, I have choose the 3 column preset which seems a bit odd as DDM automatically starts with windows.

REQUEST 1
==========
Is it possible to make this persistent? to restore the desired preset would be very handy.

SITUATION 2
==========
By default DDM will resize dragged windows to the full size of one of the area's as defined in the chosen DDM preset. In my case one of the 3 columns. To cancel this the SHIFT button can be used while dragging. This is a convenient solution. HOWEVER: This behavior also applies to windows within specific Multi Document Application, such as MS ACCESS. (interestingly enough this is not the case in MS EXCEL. Apparently these applications use different triggers)

An example: MS ACCESS is opened to the full size of one or more DDM area's. When designing a query the different tables will be shown as small windows on the design canvas. These table-windows will be dragged constantly triggering DDM to resize the table-window to the DDM area size. Off course the Design area is smaller thereby triggering MS ACCESS to resizing the design canvas and repositioning the window outside the visible area. To undo this you will need to scroll to the far right of the canvas, resize the table-window to the original size and drag it to the original position by hand. And to be careful to keep the SHIFT button pressed to not have to do this all over again.

Off course the SHIFT button needs to be pressed in the first case to prevent this from happening at all, BUT (and this took me some time to figure out) pressing the SHIFT button has a delayed effect. I do use the SHIFT button and still this happens. It seems you have to wait for DDM to show a yellow frame before letting go when dragging. The delay has an unpredictably duration making it impossible to prevent this from happening. And also it is easy to forget. This behavior makes DDM use in this situation not only inconvenient, but actually really annoying and time consuming to restore those table-windows.

I have tested this in MS ACCESS 2007 and the last version of MS ACCESS (OFFICE365). And I am sure there are other applications that may have the same issue.

REQUEST 2

==========
Can DDM be adapted to NOT (or make it a persistent configurable setting) resize windows within windows as described in the MS ACCESS example?

I hope these two request are interesting for other Dell users as well and will help making DDM an even better utility.

Kind regards,

Eduard.
