Problems with my new Dell U2414H

I recently bought a new monitor Dell U2414H I switched my old monitor Dell U2311H to this one and encountered couple of problems :

1. The touch button that is responsible to turn the monitor off and on, on the bezel of the monitor isn't so responsive to my fingers when I touch it unlike the other buttons.

Video showing the problem :

(Please visit the site to view this video)

2. From time to time when I reset my PC the icons get rearranged from the order I've put them in (it happens sometimes only). To solve this I've tried 2 suggestions I've got from people, one is to refresh the desktop once and restart the PC (I haven't refresh the desktop at all since it was a new monitor so I gave it a try), the second solution I was given is to rebuild my icon cache again (I did it using a .bat file), both seemed to work at the beginning but then the problem started to occur again indicating that these solutions didn't really help..

NOTE : "Auto arrange icons" option in the view menu when right clicking my desktop is set unchecked meaning this is not why the icons get rearrange. Also I don't know why but it only rearrange the icons sometimes not after every boot

U2414H DisplayPort Daisy Chain / MST Resolution: How I fxed it (workaround)!

Dear topic readers, Hi folks,

Last days I've spent some time setting up my 3 Dell U2414H's in Daisy Chain / MST mode.

I've had the same issues as people in this topic: U2414H DisplayPort Daisy Chain/MST Resolution Issue.

For me it turns out the monitors weren't detected correctly, so Windows uses a "Default Monitor", however, for some reason, this monitor will be set to a resolution of 1600x1200, this causes the U2414H to turn into "power saving" mode because it can't handle the -too- high resolution.

Ive managed to fix this problem by changing the resolution of the "Default Monitor" from 1600x1200 to 1920x1080.

Below the workaround that I've used to get my configuration working.

Sorry for my lack of English, my native language is Dutch.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The workaround below contains Windows Registry mods and can serious damage your PC!
Only apply this workaround when you really know what you're doing!
Neither Dell, nor I are responsible if you're messing up your PC!

First of all, we need to make some system changes to Windows, so we must run every program we need in Administrator mode.

1)     Click the Windows orb (a.k.a. Start Button) and type cmd, then Right click the cmd.exe result and select [Run as Administrator]

Now we're gonna use some "Easter Eggs" in Windows.

Lets's tell Windows to show it's "disconnected" Devices.

2)     Enter the following commands and press [Enter] after every command

> set devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices=1
> devmgmt.msc

Don't close this window.

Windows device manager will be started but the "disconnected" devices are not visible yet, to fix this, take the following steps:

3)     Click [View] followed by [Show hidden devices], so this item will show a checkmark.

4)     Open the [Monitors] section, this is possibly a mess, like this

As you can see, there are (possibly) a lot of hidden [Generic Non-PnP Monitor] entries.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Other guides on the internet describe to remove ALL hidden entries, here's my advise:
DON'T! Please read on to see why.

Now we have confirmed that Windows was not able to setup (every) screen correctly, we're gonna tell Windows to apply the right settings, next time it doesn't recognize the monitor(s).

5)     Switch back to the elevated command window and enter the following command:

> regedit

6)     The Windows registery editor will be started, find the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\DISPLAY\Default_Monitor

This entry contains one or more sub entries with a long number as name:

Keep the regedit window open and switch back to the device manager window, position the windows aside to see wat happens.

Start removing the hidden [Generic Non-PnP Monitor] entries in device manager one-by-one, you'll see that the child entries from [Default_Monitor] in regedit are also disappearing (Maybe you have to focus the regedit window and press F5 to refresh the entries manually).
Repeat this step until you have only one entry remaining, if available the only connected and visible [Generic Non-PnP Monitor].

It's important to keep at least one [Generic non-PnP Monitor] to make sure Windows will communicate to the monitor(s) at the right resolution to prevent the monitor to go into "power saving" mode.

7)     Switch to the regedit window and open the [DeviceParameters] entry of the (first and only) [Default_Monitor] child entry

As you can see, there is a key named BAD_EDID, so, if Windows is not able to get the monitor's EDID, it will fall back to this entry.

Now, take a look at the [Device Parameters] key. There can be two situations (8A or 8B)

8A)     The (grand)child entry is named the wrong resolution, e.g. 1600,1200, we have to rename it.

Right click the entry with the wrong resolution, e.g. 1600,1200 and click [Rename].
Now change the name to 1920,1080

8B)     There is no child entry, so we have to create it

Right click the [Device Parameters] entry, click [New] followed by [Key].
Now enter the name MODES.

Richt click the created [Modes] entry, click [New] followed by [Key] and enter the name 1920,1080.

If you have alreay some DELAXXX entries, make sure that every entry with the wrong resolution is changed to the right one: 1920,1080

OK, That's it.

Let's see if it worked

Now try to turn your displays on and off (in different order) and try to restart your PC (multiple times).

In my case, with 3 U2414H's in Daisy Chain mode my results are:

09)     Device manager:

10)     Windows display setup:

11)     Intel DisplayPort topology (sorry it's in Dutch)

12)     Regedit

Good to know:

Make sure the last monitor in the Daisy Chain is set to DisplayPort 1.2: OFF!

Also good to know:

There is a possibility that you will see more entries aside of [Default_Monitor] and [DELA0A3].

According to the Dell display driver, this are the enumerations used by Dell:

HDMI1 - DELA0A4
HDMI2 - DELA0B2
DisplayPort - DELA0A2
miniDisplayPort - DELA0A3

So if you have connected your monitor another way, you will see entries of this connection as well.

When using another input port on your monitor to configure your DisplayPort (DaisyChain, MST) setup, make sure to unplug this port before entering DisplayPort mode. It look likes the monitor is reporting the same ID on all ports, so Windows can be confused when it detects the same ID on both DP as e.g. HDMI.

Conclusion

This is what worked for me. I hope to help you people by sharing this experience and maybe some Dell technicians can use this information to reproduce the problem and fix it permanently..

Dell U2414H wrong resolution (640x480) after sleep

Hi,

I have bought a new DELL U2414H and I have it connected via MiniDisplayPort (Monitor) -> DisplayPort (GPU)... The thing is, when my PC goes to sleep and I wake it up, the monitor is showing different resolution 640x480 and it's not recognized.. it says Generic PNP monitor. Then I have to click recognize in screen resolution settings...

I'm really dissapointed as I have bought such an expensive monitor (at least for me) and this is happening.. it's driving me crazy.. Please help me with this :(

- I only have 1 monitor

- I have ASUS R9 270x graphics card with 14.4 drivers

- DP 1.2 is disabled

- tried factory reset ->nothing

I don't want to return it... the monitor itself is great but this is really annoying... :((

Computer Model: Self built desktop
OS: Windows 8.1 64-bit
Gfx Card: PNY GTX 770 2GB
Ports on card: 2 DVI

* What cable are you using to attach the video card to the monitor? I tried using a DVI-VGA to VGA on the monitor, and just a DVI cable. Both have the same problem.

* Are you using the Dell supplied cable? No
* Press the monitor Menu button to open the monitor OSD (On Screen Display). The bottom of that screen should show a resolution. That resolution should match the monitor default resolution. It is correct.
* Can you post a video of the issue? There is no need in this case.
* Full description of the monitor issue? My monitor has some image retention on the left side. It was there yesterday and then eventually went away. Now it is back again today and it won't go away. I ran the LCD Conditioning overnight and it didn't help. I did the diagnostic (holding buttons 1 and 4 with cables unplugged) and it still had the image retention.

I'm pretty sure the monitor needs to be replaced, I was hoping it was within warranty. I think I got it 2 years ago.

U2312HM monitor backlight problems

I have problems similar to the one reported here. When changing the resolution, or switching between monitors using Win+P (I am using two monitors, the other one is an ST2210), the backlight occasionally does not turn on or the bottom right corner backlight is dark. See the image below for the dark corner. For the former, I know the image is being displayed as I can make out my desktop by shining a flashlight on the monitor. Factory reset did not fix it and built-in diagnostics passed. I bought this monitor in March 2013, but this has been happening for a little while now.

Cannot get 3x U2713HM to match calibration...

I bought 2x U2713HM monitors almost a year ago.  I used my x-rite calibration tool (eye-one Match 3) to get these two monitors to match- they colors seem to match perfectly.

I recently purchased a new U2713HM for a triple monitor setup.  I tried to calibrate this new monitor and it is a little off from the other two- it seems like the white balance is off.  It is close, but it is clearly not the same.

My other two monitors are perfect, but this one is off and it bothers me after spending so much on a third monitor.  I am using a GTX 660 to run all monitors, DVI for two monitors, displayport for the third, all running 1440p resolution.  I did try switching the DVI and displayport connections and the monitors colors are still off.

Any ideas?

U2713HM Squares, distortion, backlight

Hi everyone. Thanks in advance for your help. U2713HM sudden screen problems -- squares and backlighting. As instructed in the monitor sticky, I have tried factory reset and built in diagnostics. Using the built in diagnostics I believe I have ruled out the PC, however just in case it is -- Windows 7, Asus GTX 780, and using a DVI-D cable.  It is a custom PC so no model number.

Running at default resolution - 2650x1440 @60hz . Photo below.  Background is set to white.

A couple more things I should have mentioned. This happened while the PC was on. I turned it on, walked away and came back 15 min later to find it like this. Also, the brightness variation is real, it is not the camera. The right side is definitely a lot worse. This unit was purchased in March of 2013. It's on a high-end surge protector and wasn't banged around or anything. I've been very delicate with the unit. Its the most expensive part I own!

UP3214Q/UP2414Q - 1/2 screen issue and/or No picture after powering off, then on

$

I got some more problems with the UP3214Q: Every couple of computer starts, once I get the login screen displayed, only half the screen shows a picture (the right hand side), with the left half being black. After login, I get the full picture. Prior to the login screen, I also have full screen picture (BIOS screen, Windows loading screen). The second issue is even more annoying: If I power off the device while my PC is still running, then power it back on, I will never get a picture again. No amount of hitting random keys and klicking about (I can hear windows and moan in the background If I manage to blindly hit the wrong option) will get back any picture. Neither will switching to another input then back, nor will unplugging the displayport cable from the machine, or putting the machine to sleep and returning it back from sleep. The only way to get the picture back is to shut down the shut down the machine completely, then boot it up again. Is this supposed to happen or is something wrong with my display?

U2414H - Power Saving Mode FIX (HDMI)

$

Hello guys!

I bought 3 of the most beautiful monitors I could find, the U2414H..
But the experience as many other was horrible, because Displayport wouldn't work decently.
The same goes for HDMI. When using the HDMI cable, I often recieve "Power saving mode", where i have to turn off the monitor, and on again for it to work.

But as a twitch livestreamer, I use a HDMI capture card, so I decided to go that way.
So my setup looked like this:

PC->HDMI_SPLITTER->Main screen
The rest of the screens were connected without HDMI splitter.

The main screen was the ONLY one that did not enter Power saving mode.
So I bought 2 more of the same splitters, and connected between the monitors - and it worked!
Since then I haven't seen the Power Saving Mode.

The HDMI splitter i used had a EDID duration of 4 seconds and was HDCP compatible.
http://www.av-cables.dk/hdmi-splitter/hdmi-high-speed-aktiv-forstaerker-splitter-1-til-2-5570.html
A total of 200$ for 3 screens, but it works.

Unfortunately I do not have a fix for the DP, but this post might help.

P2314H (new) has BGR subpixel order

Hi folks, I just bought a P2314H and connected it to my Mac. After applying a hack on the Mac to force RGB color space (an OSX issue with many monitors), everything looked great, except the fonts. They are all blurry and funky. Sure enough, this monitor has BGR sub pixel order instead of RGB (see picture). If I tell OS X to rotate 180 degrees, fonts are crisp, but of course now everything is upside-down! I'm a bit annoyed because I got a great deal on it and LOVE the quality, especially for the price. The nonstandard stripe order will also cause problems for Windows users with a mix of monitors, too, because ClearType can only be optimized for one stripe order at a time across the entire computer. I rotated the snap-on bracket 180 degrees and am currently using it that way, with the OS set to rotate 180, and text is MUCH better (see pictures). The OSD cannot be set to flip but it can be set to rotate, so I have it rotated for easier adjustment. Does the P2414H share this same issue?

Standard monitor orientation: BGR order

putting laptop display on Dell monitor

I have a U2410 monitor with an HP desktop computer. Also have a Lenovo T520 laptop. I want to connect the laptop to the monitor so I can view 24 inches instead of 15. I tried connecting the laptop to the monitor with a VGA cable, but nothing was detected. Tried Catalyst, but that didn't detect anything. Then tried a Display Port cable. Nothing detected. So how does one get a laptop display to appear on a Dell monitor? Desktop is Win 7. Laptop is Win 8.1.

Remote Control for a Dell Monitor used as a TV

$

I have a new ST2421L Dell Monitor that I want to use as a TV attached to a Dish Network Receiver, via a HDMI cable.Everything is working ok, but I am looking to control the Monitor power and volume from a remote control.

Usually, Dish provides a code that when set, will allow the options to power off or change the volume through the Dish remote control. However, none of the Dish codes will work, so I was wondering if anyone had any other ideas on how to remotely control the power and volume for this Monitor (or at least the power)?

The sound is controlled using computer speakers plugged into the Audio Out on the monitor, if that helps in providing volume control by remote.

Thanks,

I am not sure whether this is the right place for this issue but I do hope you can help. I bought a U2713H here in South Africa and I operate Apple Mac's - I know!

I am using an i1Pro - this is the old version and since x-rite my device is limited to Monitor Calibration only even with new software.

I cannot calibrate the Monitor satisfactorily.

First question: is this device (old i1) capable of calibrating this monitor? I know that these monitors will only accept i1 but my device is the old version.

Second question: when the calibration routine is finished where in the Dell Menu is the setting stored, Does this now become a Preset Mode - Custom Color?

I just got the UP3214Q delivered to me and the first thing that I noticed is that when the screen goes black (not off) the top left corner is slightly lighter in color. It's grey, not black. Is this something I can fix with software? Or should I return it immediately?

I'm running the latest version of OSX with the new Mac Pro.

Can someone please advise what they think regards a screen burn issue i'm having as the supplier I got the monitor from is stating I have caused screen burn through mis-use.

I bought 2x U2713HM for my new iMac. I only bought the monitors today from the supplier, and after 2hrs I now have screen burn on one of the monitors but the other monitor is fine. I have ran the LCD conditioning option in the monitor but this has not cleared it.

Anyone be of any help or should Dell be able to replace the monitor as im sure screen burn should not occur in just under 2hrs?

U2414H new revision?

Hi,

I am looking for a 5 x 1 monitor setup. U2414H seems like a decent choice but seeing the number of issues that it has with display port / hdmi / monitor recognition ...etc, I am quite positive that in a 5 monitor setup things will go badly. So, is there a new revision of the monitor coming up in the near future that fixes the current problems?

Thank you,

Calin
