U2410f Power Problem

I've seen a number of posts on this forum and in the wider community sites about problems with the "deep sleep mode" and this monitor.

The monitor was powered off and now refuses to power up, in as much as the little blue light refuses to come on.  However, if I connect up the monitor to the computer and power, then the computer recognises the monitor and the usb ports and my display adjusts (sadly the Dell is set up as the #1 screen so I cannot see items that I need to adjust the resolution, identify monitors, force the system to find the monitor again).  It appears, that the monitor is "still there" somewhere but cannot bring itself up from it's slumber or whatever state it's in.

In my case, I don't even see any screens to select a new input source, nor anything, the monitor just stays black but the computer responds as if it was active.

Have tried with DVI cable and VGA cable.  Have tried connecting with the PC on.  Have tried re-connecting and powering up the PC.

I have had this happen twice and the last time the monitor was put on the side to "rest" whilst I tried to find someone who might be able to repair it and with no luck and just before I decided to throw it out I gave it a 2nd test and lo-and-behold, as if by magic, it worked again.  I assume some capacitor is holding on its charge until it forces a re-set somewhere?

Sadly I'm not in my warranty period anymore so I'm not able to send it in to get replaced, but ... is this a common issue with Dell monitors?  If I bought another (different) model is there a chance of it happening on that?  I see so many (unanswered) posts on this forum about new firmware etc but with no resolution (from 2009 to today) I'm very nervous about buying a dell as a replacement (which I was when this monitor turned off again).

And what steps can be taken apart from leaving the power off for an extended period of time?

And what is the correct way to re-connect?  Monitor cable then power, power then dvi?

(and does holding the power button whilst disconnected work?)

(oh and I'm on a PC not mac)
