2408WFP - Please help me calibrate to help with vision problems

I would really appreciate any help or suggestions - this has been a very good monitor, but my eyesight is getting worse and I think that there are enough options available to optimize my experience. First, just a few basic questions.

1. Will any of the calibration tools listed in the top sticky work with this monitor. If not, does Dell have one, or is there another option?

2. In general, is it better to set the brightness and contrast on the monitor or with the video card control panel? I have the GEForce 8800 GT.

Specifically, the trouble I have has to do with really bright backgrounds and difficulty reading the text on websites. It just so happens that right about the time my eyes started to get worse, the trend on websites was to make the text darker and lighter greys, and not plain black. I do often zoom in to see things better, but this has it's drawbacks with scrolling and what not. So the first thing, I think, is to make sure the monitor is calibrated. Then move on to the control panel and other OS options. So here are a few more questions, if you please.

1. The one Windows 7 theme reverses the color  white text on black background, but this is very limited. Are there any other better reversed themes out there?

2. For size issues, there doesn't seem to be an easy solution. I've tried increasing the DPI setting, but this only works well with about half the applications I use Does anyone know of a utility or something that will do this better?

3. What about decreasing the resolution? It's always been the rule to set the monitor at it's optimal res - but does anyone decrease the resolution with good results? So some monitors handle this better than others, say the newer LEDs?

What I would like to see is the whites less bright and the text stand out more, if I could just boil it down to a simple question. But although that sounds like a simple contrast change, that doesn't do the trick. I would really appreciate any help at all with this issue. While I'm awaiting replies, I will be doing some more homework. Thanks!
