DP output on not available on XPS8900 using video card

I recently purchased a standard dell package of an XPS8900 with U2414H monitor. The monitor is supplied with miniDP-DP cable.  The XPS8900 standard build includes a NV GTX 745 4G DDR video card, and the spec states that the machine has a DP output. However, the DP output appears only to work with the onboard video, not with the NV GTX 745 4G DDR.  Hence you have to either get an HDMI cable to connect with the U2414H monitor or use the supoplied cable with the onboard video.  What is going on? I suspect most purchasers of this machine will plug into the DP socket, which means they are not using the NV GTX video card - so why include it as standard?

Dell should either refund the cost of the video card (about £160 in the UK) or provide a new video card with a suitable DP socket.
