Problem getting calibration software to work on Dell U2413. Any help appreciated.

I have exhausted all avenues I know of to try to get my Dell U2413 monitor calibrated with the "proprietary" X-Rite i1 Display Pro colorimeter that I also bought from Dell. I'm a little perturbed that I spent around $650.00 for the monitor and colorimeter, and can't get it to calibrate. Here's a run down of what I have done so far in case anyone sees something that I might try differently that might help:

1. The computer is a Dell XPS 8700, with an Intel i7-4790 CPU, and Nvidia GeForce GTX 745 display processor.
2. The computer came with Windows 7 Professional software. I upgraded to Windows 10. Then I started the process of trying to install and calibrate the U2413 monitor using the latest software from Dell, using the step by step process set out in the photographylife.com article. After installing the Dell Ultrasharp Calibration Software (DUCS), everything seemed to be going good, the software recognized the U2413, then I get to the point to "Start Measurement", put the colorimeter on the monitor where it says to put it, hit next, then get this message.
"Could not set the display preset (CAL1 or CAL2). Error communicating with the display. Please verify the USB connection. Power cycle the display, restart the application and try again".

3. I did what the error message suggested, that didn't work. I then set out on a 4 hour process of doing everything I could think of to get this to work. Nothing works. I then finally called Dell support, got a software tech who was very nice and patient, and we spent 2 hours on the phone going through various scenarios to try to get it to work. I unplugged the DVI cable and USB cable from the monitor, then plugged them them back in again. I tried using a USB2 and USB3 port, both on the back of the computer (not on the monitor). The tech took control of my computer, reverted the OS to Windows 7 Professional, reinstalled the current drivers for the monitor, deleted the DUCS software and reinstalled it. After doing all this, something happened that made the calibration process work. I calibrated CAL1 and CAL2, and all looked good.
4. After getting off the phone with the Dell tech, I then processed a photo in Lightroom, and then opened the file on my Dell XPS laptop, and the color was off and the photo was extremely dark. So, I opened up the Dell Ultrasharp Calibration Software (DUCS) on the desktop again, and tried to calibrate the monitor again. Once I got to "Start Measurement", I got the same error message as above. I hadn't changed anything since the calibration worked before. I have tried everything I know of again, short of calling another Dell tech, but to no avail. Still getting the above error message.
Anybody have any good suggestions? I'm about at my wits end. I'll try anything at this point. Thanks all.
